SU Montgomery - Susie Priori, MD, Anatomy & Physiology Instructor, won the lead role in a play titled “The Moving of Lilla Barton.” The comedy chronicles the attempts of a small Alabama church’s leadership to evict the widow of a deceased minister from the church rectory. Members of the congregation find that Lilla will not be moved, which leaves them stuck in a spiritual and practical quandary.
The play will be presented at the Red Door Theatre in Union Springs, Alabama, February 12 - 14. Dr. Priori recently performed in “Steel Magnolias” this fall.
SU Tampa – Physician Assistant Program Director and Associate Professor Steve Martin, AGC, MPAS, PA-C, volunteers as part of a Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) with the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS), under the US Department of Health and Human Services. He has been on several deployments including Hurricane Lili (Louisiana, 2002), Hurricane Charley (Florida, 2004), and most recently he was in Galveston, Texas, with a DMAT to help residents in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike.

“After Hurricane Ike, many patients presented with the expected injuries following a hurricane – puncture wounds, lacerations, and fractures,” said Professor Martin. “There were also a number of patients with chronic medical needs – such as diabetics and heart patients. We had two helicopters and several ambulances at our disposal to transport critical, emergent, and urgent patients to hospitals in Houston.”
SU West Palm Beach – Nursing Program Director, Priscilla Bartolone, successfully defended her dissertation and earned a Doctor of Science Nursing (DNS) degree in late October. She will walk in the graduation ceremony on December 11 at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida.
“Completing all of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Nursing Science was a long-term commitment,” said Dr. Bartolone, who enrolled in the program in 2002 and has been steadily making progress while working full time at South University.
“Dr. Bartolone is dedicated to her students, to her colleagues, and to her profession,” said David McGuire, President – West Palm Beach. “I am impressed with her tenacity and know that she is an inspiration not only to our Nursing students but to all of our students in West Palm Beach.”
SU Savannah - The Outstanding Pharmacy Intern/Extern Award was presented to South University student Bill Trinh, Doctor of Pharmacy Candidate Class of 2009, at the GSHP (Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists) Annual Meeting held in Helen, Georgia, on October 25. The award recognizes excellence in future pharmacists. Nominations are presented by preceptors, educators, or any other GSHP member who has had direct contact with an intern or extern who has shown exemplary service in this role.

SU Savannah - Pearce Connerat (photo left) is an instructor in South University's College of Business, and he is a runner. He ran in the 19th Annual YMCA Heart-of-Savannah 5K in October and finished competitively in his age group. He runs with his colleague, Michael Manuel (photo right), also an instructor at South University in General Studies. The two have been running together and participating in local races for nearly 20 years. Both compete in the annual Savannah Bridge Run and the Tybee 8K in February.
Connerat starting running when he was 40 years old, and he has kept running, he says, "mostly for the fun of it." He currently runs 20 to 25 kilometers per week to stay fit. Connerat's advice to anyone who would like to start running: "start slow and run every day."

SU Savannah – Pharmacy graduate Derek T. Stranton received his commission as a Captain in the U.S. Army on September 30. Several dozen attendees gathered with cameras in hand at the base of the campus’s clock tower to watch the ceremony in which Derek made an oath to serve the United States Army. Associate Professor, Michael Schwartz, PharmD, School of Pharmacy, is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard, and he administered the oath and presided over the ceremony.
James (Jim) Wynn, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Pharmacy, attended the event. “Our pharmacy students never cease to amaze me,” said Dr. Wynn. “I am proud of Derek’s many accomplishments and wish him and his family all the best.”
